The Chronicles of the Catholic Church in Lithuania
The year 2022 marks the 50th anniversary of the publication of a book written in secret during the communist occupation of Lithuania. The Chronicles of the Catholic Church in Lithuania is a compilation of stories about the ways in which the Church survived and even thrived while forces hostile to the faith were set against destroying her. The entries in this important piece of history were translated into English as they were intended to get word to the West about what was happening behind the evil Iron Curtain of Communism. Memorialized in the Chronicles are many events that led up to Lithuania submitting to its own 1939 occupation by the U.S.S.R., only one year after Sr. Maria Faustina Kowalska left Vilnius with acute tuberculosis. Cardinal Sigitas Tamkevičius, Archbishop Emeritus of Kaunas (Lithuania), was responsible for much of the work behind the book, and will join us to tell some of what he remembers about “Soviet Times.”
